Joy Roggenkamp Scarf

Joy Roggenkamp was one of Brisbane’s most significant watercolour artists during the 1960s and 1970s. She exhibited throughout Australia during her career and was awarded numerous prestigious watercolour prizes.

Joy began painting as a young woman inspired by her personal world, the landscape, and urban settings. She was tutored by Jon Molvig at his Kangaroo Point studio during the 1950s where she developed a technique of wet-on-wet colours which gave her watercolours a soft, bleeding effect.

This silk scarf features Back Street, Spring Hill by Joy Roggenkamp, acquired in 1992 as part of the City of Brisbane Collection. Painted by Joy during the 1980s, it depicts the inner city Brisbane suburb of Spring Hill featuring the Queenslander style homes that Brisbane is so well known for!
